CHAPTER EIGHT

"God you just are a bit of a mess, now aren't you?" I tease him as he stands with his shirt on and nothing else besides that.

"Don't mock," he teases, "Are you gonna help me look or not?"

In our rush and our enthusiasm we'd divested hard and fast, tossing our clothes about as if we didn't care where they went which I suppose is about accurate because we honestly didn't. Well, I didn't at least and I'm pretty sure that Griffin was in the same boat as me.

Now that we were done, though, well that is where regret started to come in. For Griffin especially who, after scrambling about in the darkness trying to find his clothes came up only with his shirt.

For my part I faired a bit better, had lost a few pieces but a dress covers enough that I didn't need to worry.

I sigh and shake my head. Truth is it was probably impossible. The both of us had spent plenty enough time looking that coming up empty-handed was looking more and more like an inevitability.

"I think it's gone. Probably caught by the wind and then dragged down into the water, with the tide rolling out it's far out to sea by now. Fare thee well, gentle passenger."

I lay my hand on my heart as I waxed poetical but Griffin didn't catch my joke, or if he did he wasn't amused.

"What am I supposed to do here?" he asks me, incredulous, "I mean it. Really? What am I supposed to do?"

"Streak?" I propose to him, "You're in good enough shape I'm betting you could make it all the way up to the door of the room without having to stop, my dude. Start running!"

"And then what?" he asks me, "My keys are in my pants."

I laugh, shaking my head, "No worries on that front. We'll stop by the front desk and get you a new one in the morning and in the meantime we can use... mine... oh shit."

That's about when it clicks for me that neither of us has our keys right now.

"God," he teases, "You're just a bit of a mess, now aren't you?"

Crossing my arms over my chest I stick my tongue out at him, "Your retort would be a whole lot more effective if you had pants on, Grif."

He scoffs and waves his hand, but he does pull the hem of his shirt down in front to give himself at least a modicum of dignity, "Well what are we going to do then? And I mean where were you even hiding your key anyways?"

"I had it in my clutch," I explain to him, "The one I brought with me to dinner. You made fun of me for it, remember? Asking me why I was bringing my purse when we didn't have to pay for anything."

"The bag you had?" he asks me, "The one you left by the fire?"

That's where it was. I was certain of it. I'd been so preoccupied getting up that I must have just left it behind.
